Phil Day loved Catalonia, its people and their music. He had a special interest in the music of the Gralla and the Flabiol i Bombo.

He was a great enthusiast of the Flabiol and its English equivalent, the Tabor Pipe. He and Ronny supported all of the festivals in both countries relating to this music. He was modest about his playing abilities, but held in high regard by the musicians for there are very few people outside of Spain who have mastered the complexities of the Flabiol.

Phil’s enthusiasm and encouragement infected us all, and he soon had Flabiolaires visiting Gloucester to play at the Pipe and Tabor Festival, and Taborers heading up the mountains north of Barcelona for the Festa de Flabiolaires in Arbúcies.

He did this without taking a leading role. His gentle humour made it easy for everyone to like him, but he liked to stay in the background and seek out the areas where his skills would help most.

In this subtle way Phil has done more than anyone to foster relations, and created a lasting bond between the musicians of these two traditions.

It is difficult to think of Phil at a festival, without picturing him with a camera in his hand. Whilst everyone was busy playing, processing, work-shopping, or just hanging out, Phil would be quietly capturing the scene, to put up on the web and share.

This generous, gentle, giant will be greatly missed in both countries, as the comments on these pages testify.

Phil Day estimava Catalunya, la seva gent i la seva música. Tenia un interès especial per la música de gralla i pel flabiol i bombo.

Era un gran entusiasta del flabiol i del seu equivalent anglès, la tabor pipe. Ell i la Ronny col·laboraven en tots els festivals relacionats amb aquestes músiques d’ambdós països. Les seves habilitats interpretatives eren modestes, però els músics el tenien en un gran concepte, perquè hi ha ben poca gent fora d’Espanya que hagi arribat a dominar les complexitats del flabiol.

L’estusiasme i els ànims d’en Phil se’ns van encomanar a tots, i ben aviat va tenir flabiolaires que visitaven Gloucester per tocar al Pipe and Tabor Festival, i taborers enfilant-se a les muntanyes del nord de Barcelona cap a la Festa del Flabiol d’Arbúcies.

Feia tot això sense prendre cap protagonisme. Gràcies al seu tarannà amable queia bé a tothom, però preferia quedar en segon terme i esbrinar de quina manera les seves habilitats podien ser més útils. D’aquesta manera subtil, en Phil ha fet més que ningú per fomentar les relacions entre aquestes dues tradicions, tot creant lligams perdurables entre els músics.

És difícil imaginar en Phil en un festival sense veure’l amb la càmara a la mà. Mentre tothom anava enfeinat tocant, organitzant, treballant als tallers o simplement passant de tot, en Phil captava discretament les escenes, per posar-les després al web i compartir-les.

En ambdós països es trobarà a faltar molt aquest generós i gentil gegant, tal i com ho testimonien els comentaris d’aquestes planes.
